In the spring of 1970, the students at the University of New Hampshire went on strike. This was in reaction to the killng, on May 4, 1970, of 4 Kent State College students by National Guard Troops during an anti-war demonstration. There was a group of students at the University of New Hampshire producing a newsletter entitled "Strike Daily". In 1861, the United States federal government approved the Morrill Act which set aside land in each state for the founding of public higher education. In 1862, the New Hampshire state legislature accepted the grant of 80,000 acres of public lands on which to set up a university.
